Everyone knows Salford Lads Club and The Smiths go hand in glove. And that link means six youngsters are leaving for the trip of a lifetime. Sales of a limited-edition T-shirt of the band raised an astonishing £50,000. Now some of the cash is being used to send club members, two volunteers and club leaders to America.

They will forever be part of the city's rock heritage. Posing on an Ordsall backstreet is an iconic image of The Smiths. That, picture, and singer Morrissey's admiration for playwright Shelagh Delaney means Salford is entwined in the band's history.
